Hi, here is what I normally advise:
1. Unique & Quality Content
Avoid duplicate content at all cost.
2. Select your keywords very carefully
Don't try to rank high for very competitive keywords such as "weight loss". There is simply too much competition.
3. Always include your main keyword or key phrase in the title of your website.
4. Use your main keyword or keyphrase in your <h1> tag and include secondary keywords in your <h2> to <h5> tags.
5. Highlight some important keywords in your body by putting it in bold, e.g. <b>keyword</b>
6. Try to obtain a domain name that contains your main keyword or key phrase, but avoid keyword spamming (don't add many different keywords that makes no sense to "real" people)
7. Get one-way backlinks by writing & submitting articles (ezinearticles.com is very good), submitting your site to directories, and by making posts on blogs that do not use the rel=nofollow attribute.
8. Use many variations of your keyword or key phrase in your body.
9. If your website has images, use the alt tag to include your keyword or key phrase. (Search engines cannot "read" images. You need to tell them wsearch all search engineshat the image is about)
10. Avoid the following - Link schemes, and buying links that pass PageRank.

It is the content of your site that gets the high rankings along with the amount of visits. If you link the pages in your site and people roam through your website, your rankings will increase. There is a lot of good literature that you can find on build a website that will move up in the ranks. It is very difficult to have a website that ranks high in the search engines and it takes time for it to get to the top. Website building is an art. If you are building a website, don't set your expectations too high at the start. Continue to get educated in the art of web design and you will see your site progress.
